My Grandfather, Stanisław Wiśniewski, was born in Rościszewo in 1885. He is listed in the indeks along with his parents (Thank You, Thank You) so I know it is the right guy. I would like to get a copy of his birth record. I have been learning to use Szukajwarchiwach.pl on the Państwowo Archiwum w Płocku. It is pretty challenging at first but I have found the Akta urodzeń, małzeństw i zgonów files for 1885. There are many of them - 3 pages. Each file lists Jednostka aktowa and it looks like they are all different with 5 numbers separated with "/". But other than that they all look pretty much the same. My grandfather's indeks says his birth is in Akt 109. Is there a way to use this 109 to find out which file contains his record? I am so close and I would gladly look through all the files if I have to but they are all in old Russian so it is getting pretty difficult. No, that's not quite right. It is getting very difficult. (How do you guys read old Russian? Very impressive!)
How do I go the last step from his indeks to the actual birth record?
Thank you for any help you can suggest.

Thank you Włodzimierz. I appreciate your help and wish that I could figure how to do this without bothering others. I tried to write to sekretariat but never made contact. I don't know what I was doing wrong. But it sounds like I would need to be a logged user and I don't know how to do that either.
If I can find a few more pieces of data I will try to visit Poland and will buy you a beer while I am there. I better be careful. The PTG members and others on this forum have been so helpful I may spend all my time drinking beer.
Thank you again.

I just used form "zapytaj o skany" on szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl (first time from AP Płock). I will let you know (here).
Maybe (but only maybe) is not coincidence that this part is "zapytaj o skany" in english version not "ask for scan". We will see how it works when you write in polish to AP Płock using this part of service szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl. |

Wouldn't it be easier to just go to your local Family History Center in Montana https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/Ca ... ry_Centers and have a look at Film 1733745 Akta urodzeń, małżeństw, zgonów 1882-1888 https://www.familysearch.org/search/cat ... %20Library
specifically Item 4, being the 1885 birth, marriage and death records?
Save a copy of birth record #109 on a USB stick, and then post it on the forum for a translation. Although the text may be in Cyrillic, the record numbers are readable.
Seems like a lot less hassle to go to your local FHC, as a first step.

In the words of that famous American, Homer Simpson - "Doh!
I only do genealogy in the Winter and this is my second Winter, so I will claim ignorance ( even though it may be something more). I can ride my bike to the Family Search library in our town. (It has been a very mild Winter in Western Montana so I really can ride my bike.) Thank you for that advice. I have gotten used to using the online Family History files for my Slovakian heritage so you'd think I'd figure out that I could use it for Polish heritage as well. But I have never used the library here so I will certainly do that now.
Translating the record, though, is where you separate the men from the boys. An 1887 record regarding my grandmother that Janek helped me with before Christmas turned out to be in old Russian. I finally found a native Russian educator here who translated it in two steps: 1) transcribe to modern Russian, 2) translate to English. It is a very cool record that I can share if anyone is interested. But apparently old Russian presents a unique challenge. I tried to have a friend look at it. She recently graduated from Harvard in Russian. She said she could not do it.
Now if I can just find my bicycle tire pump.
Pozdrawiam.
Paul

Well, Dzień dobri Dziadek! Miło mi Pana poznać! (or something like that)
Thank you, thank you! This is indeed my grandfather. I can read some of the names. And I received instructions (offline) on how to read old Russian church records. I also have found a retired Russian professor here who can help me with translating old Russian if I need it.
Again, thank you Włodzimierz for the picture. And thank you Waldemar for the reference. And dziękuję bardzo Dziadek za pomoć. (He's my grandfather so I hope he forgives my poor Polish language skills.)
pozdrawiam all,
Paul |
