Witam,
I am hoping to locate some information in regards to the family of one of my Grandfather’s in Poland. My Grandfather, Jan Sokołowski, was born in the village of Uniszki Zawadzkie, north of Mława in January of 1891 to Józef Sokołowski and Marianna Szemplińska. His Godmother was Franciszka Szczepkowska (Sister to his mother, Marianna) and her husband Jan, who resided in the nearby village of Kołaki (and later Gołębie).
Jan Sokołowski married my Grandmother, Marta Zielińska in 1915 and they went on to have three children. Jan died on 31 December 1944 in Erie, Pennsylvania, USA, due to diabetic coma and chronic alcoholism. Since Jan’s children are deceased, as is his wife as of 1970, there is no information as to if Jan kept in contact with his two sisters who emigrated to America and in his obituary it does not list his parents and/or siblings as living/being in contact with him.
Jan’s siblings :
Waleria Sokołowska – Born 15 December 1893 in Kuklin. Emigrated to America in 1911. Died 1974 in New York, USA.
Leopold Sokołowski – Born 16 February 1896 in Uniszki Zawadzkie. Unknown if/when married and Unknown when deceased.
Apolonia Sokołowska – Born 28 January 1898 in Uniszki Zawadzkie. Emigrated to America in 1914.
Anna Sokołowska – Born 27 July 1900 in Budy Cegielnia. Unknown if/when married and Unknown when deceased.
Stanisław Sokołowski – Unknown when born, possibly around 1905 around Mława. Died in the village of Kołaki on 24 June 1910.
The only clues I have as to where Jan’s parents and/or siblings could have lived is from the Shipping Manifest for Apolonia Sokołowska when she lists her mother, Marianna Sokołowska, as residing in Mława in 1944. I do know that Jan’s father, Józef, came to America in 1904 but returned to Poland shortly after.
Jan’s Mother, Marianna, had a lot of family that came from Janowiec Kościelny. Her sister, Franciszka, lived in Kołaki/Gołębie with her husband and died at Mława Hospital in January 1931. Jan Szczepkowski, her husband, died also in Mława in 1929. The Szcepkowski’s had several children, some who emigrated to America and some who remained in Poland.
When I visited Poland in 2018 I visited the cemetery of Wieczfnia Kościelna and was unable to locate any graves for Jan’s parent’s or siblings – Anna and Leopold. I had plans to visit the cemetery of Janowiec Kościelny but at the last minute was unable to.
I have searched many records from the areas including straty.pl to see if perhaps either of Jan’s siblings and/or parents were victims of the Holocaust/Gestapo but have come up empty handed. I believe that Jan’s parents likely stayed in the area as they never moved far away from Mława and resided close to the family of Jan’s Mother. I also have made attempts to try to reach potential cemeteries in Mława by mail but have been unsuccessful.
Are there any local historians who may be of assistance to help search for Jan’s parents/siblings in this area or any other avenues I can use to try to search for them? Any help would be greatly appreciates.
Pozdrawiam,
Justin |

Hi Krystyna,
Thank you, but that is information I was already aware of in regards to Józef’s parents’ marriage in Dzierzgowo. Unfortunately none of the searches I’ve used in Geneteka have yielded any death records for The siblings and parents of Jan Sokołowski nor any marriage records for Jan’s siblings.
Pozdrawiam,
Justin |
