Przyjechała do Stanów Zjednoczonych wraz z rodzicami w 1905 roku.
Jej ojcem był Alexander Kosse vel. Kossow z Wilna i jej matka to Anela Ančevska z Rygi.
Piotra i Pawła w Wilnie i chrzest Aneli w Rydze.

Hi,
1. The first surname in the marriage record is actually Ferdinantov, not Ferdynant, but you are right – it must have been derived from the name Ferdinand. The given name is Salomea. This would suggest a Jewish connection. Consider possible conversion of this couple to Catholicism at some point. This would explain why you cannot find anything in Vilno.
The surname of the bride's mother is of German origin and I guess it would be spelt Mölder. There were a lot of Germans in Riga at the time. Also, there were many Jews of German origin there.
2. If the Jewish lead will stand the trial, Jews were not particularly picky about the form of their surnames. Prior to 19th century they did not use surnames at all. Later they were forced by the authorities to adopt one. In this case the surname sounds more French than German to me, though, something like Ceausse. A French company was earlier engaged in construction and later in operation of the railways in the area. Kossov is a natural Russification of Kosse. Again, this shows Alexander was not particularly picky.
3. The bride's surname is Polish and the correct spelling is Anczewska.
Hope this helps

Thank you Marek. I hadn't considered a German or Jewish connection. When Anela Anczewska died, Alexander married a woman from Germany named Josephine Marcel. Some records say she's from Poland, she may have been born in a part of Poland that was part of Germany at the time.
My mother took a DNA test and it didn't find any German or Jewish DNA. Only Baltic and Balkan. I know these tests aren't very accurate though.
Alexander and Anela had three children and on the baptism for each it lists his name as "Kosse vel Kossow" so I thought it must have been important to him to have both names listed.
Thank you again |

There is a similar Latvian genealogical site here:
http://www.ciltskoki.lv/
that also runs a forum. They indexed some records, so far not from Riga, though. The site is in Latvian, but some guys there do speak English. Why don't you try it?
My guess is your Aleksander was somehow related to the railways. The line from Petersburg to Warsaw was completed in 1861. Then they constructed the line from Daugapils to Riga. This would explain why he got Riga.
