Hello,

I am looking at death entry #18, 12 November 1917 for Jozef Wąsik.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1clwinM ... gHuas/view

I can read the information but what I can't understand is the sentence pertaining to, I believe, the military listed under his age at death. Other family members say he died in Russia and I'm wondering if this sentence would give some clues?

Thank you,
Heather

Dear Heather,

A part of this is in Latin and German.
I guess that Józef Wąsik died of pneumonia on Nov 12th, 1917 and he was 49 1/2 years old. His wife was Anna Fila. I also guess that his death was related from military hospital, but you need someone speaking German to confirm this and give more detail.

Nika

Dear Heather,

The printed frame of this page is in Latin. The leftmost column gives you the entry number, 18. Anno 1917 means in the year 1917. Mensis is month, Dies is day. Beneath that, Mortis means death date and Sepulturae means the day the person was buried. Numerus Domus means number of the house. Nomen mortui means name of the deceased. Next comes the question of religion: catholica (Catholic), aut alia (something else). Next the gender, masculinum or femininum. Dies Vitae means days of life, i.e. age. Morbus et Qualitas Mortus means cause of death or type of death (i.e. disease, accident, etc.).

For #18, everything is as noted above: Józef Wąsik died on 12 November 1917. He was buried on 14 November. Agr. is short for agricola, Latin for "farmer." Maritas means his spouse, and her name is Anna Fila (or similar, I can't quite make out the third letter). Nat. means born, so she was born 16 March 1868. Cop. means married, and they were married on 16 October 1895. In the next bit, the line means yes and the dot means no. Thus, Józef Wąsik was Catholic and male. At his death he was 49.5 years old. His cause of death was pneumonia. The massage was related by the Militärseelsorge ("military soul carer," i.e. military chaplain). The letters k.u.k. during this time period always denote Austrian; it's short for "kaiserlich und königlich," which is German for "imperial and royal." That's because Austria-Hungary was a dual monarchy, where the Habsburg head of state was both emperor of Austria and king of Hungary. "des" means "of." Feldspital means field hospital, in this case Nr. 908. Feldpost means army postal service, which didn't have addresses because people were shuffled around a lot and you also didn't want to give away military positions in the field by providing concrete addresses. This is probably the military postal address number of the chaplain who reported the death, but it could also be the number for Józef Wąsik. You'd need other sources to confirm that. Hope that helps!
