| I recently found my great grandfather's marriage record and was surprised that his name was recorded as Mikolaj Moszpański vel Osmanski. No father was recorded, and his mother was recorded as Maryanna Moszpańska. Our family name is Osmanski. I surmise Mikolaj was born out of wedlock. I've learned that the Russian vel means something like "aka", or "going by" and believe that he was raised by a family with the name Osmanski and he adopted that name. A search of the name Moszpański here https://geneszukacz.genealodzy.pl/ brings up only 31 birth records total in all regions of Poland! This seems to be a very rare name indeed. I'm wondering and I'm looking for input, was perhaps Moszpański a name that was assigned to children born out of wedlock in the 1860s? |
